Your face is like a canvas and just like a good painting, you need to choose the right shades for the final outlook to be breathtaking. When doing make-up, one of the first things that you need to get right is the base. If you get that wrong, your face can look dull and patchy.
Never be an impulsive buyer, you need to spend more than just 5 minutes to get that right shade. Below you’ll find tips that can help you select a good base.
Tip 1:
Select the right formula and coverage for your skin. It is essential to know one’s skin type before you invest in any product. Most bases in the market are formulated based on the skin type for example, for oily, dry, normal, combination, sensitive, mature. Choose wisely according to your type.
Tip 2:
If you have good skin but want to even out a few ruddy areas invest in a product which offers a light coverage. If your skin tone is uneven and you have blemishes, consider a medium coverage/heavy coverage base to get that flawless look. When choosing a setting powder for a heavy coverage foundation, always opt for a light coverage powder, if not, your face will look cakey. Choosing the coverage can also be seasonal, opt for lighter consistency in summers and a creamier one in winters.
Tip 3:
Don’t judge the base depending on the colour that you see from the display. Always try before you buy, not on your wrist or on the back of your hand but on your face. Doing so, you can feel the texture, coverage and the finished look.
Tip 4:
Always go for a shade that disappears or completely blends into your skin. Reason being base is not used to make you look fairer. Instead, it should even out your complexion, give you a flawless and natural finish without anyone noticing that you’ve applied something.
Tip 5:
Try the base on a clean and fresh face. After application, step out in the natural light to see how it looks on your skin. In my experience, whenever you try foundation in a departmental store, never choose a shade that’s lighter that your skin since colours always look a tone lighter when you step out in the natural light.
Tip 6:
Always try it on the cheek to see if the colour disappears into your skin or on your jaw line to see if it matches the colour of your neck and face. You can also choose the shade that’s between the colour of your face and neck, this would also create a very natural effect without being too obvious.
Tip 7:
Don’t get confused between the yellow and pink tone. Always choose the one that blends into your skin. You’ll never go wrong with this shade.
